PSHE

At John Hellin’s we consider our PSHE curriculum to be a vital tool which ensures all our children leave primary education with the skills to be happy, confident and responsible members of the public. Here is an outline of our PSHE curriculum intent which aligns with the national curriculum:

  • To prepare children to be a global citizen in a diverse society and prepare them for the opportunities, responsibilities and experiences for later life.
  • To make a positive contribution to the life of the school and become responsible members of society.
  • To develop children to want to do their very best at all times and to learn to work collaboratively with others.
  • To develop children as citizens of the world focusing on life skills and ensuring our schools values are a common thread in everything we do.
  • To be a fully inclusive school with an inclusive curriculum where differences are celebrated and we empower and inspire all of our children to have a thirst for learning.
  • To encourage children to develop independence, confidence, and a healthy lifestyle approach.
  • To develop confidence, resilience and knowledge so that they can keep themselves mentally healthy.
  • To provide our children with a strong understanding of the diverse world around them and support them in playing a positive role in contributing to the school and the wider community.
  • To develop children intellectually, morally, socially and spiritually.
  • To incorporate an age appropriate understanding of RSE, as set out in the statutory guidance, enabling all children to be safe and to understand and develop healthy relationships both now and in their future lives.

At John Hellins, we follow a programme called Jigsaw for all of our PSHE lessons. Jigsaw, the mindful approach to PSHE (Personal, Social, and Health Education) is a teaching and learning programme which includes the statutory RSHE (Relationships Education, Sex Education and Health Education) and has a strong focus on wellbeing as well as emotional and mental health. Jigsaw believes that this work is vital to support children’s development and to underpin their learning capacity.

Jigsaw is designed as a whole school approach, with all year groups working on the same theme (puzzle piece). There are six puzzles to cover each year and these themes are repeated every year. All classes study the same puzzle at the same time, sequentially ordered to suit the age group of the children.

The different puzzle pieces are:
