Anning Class
In Anning Class, we strive to provide all children with high-quality teaching and learning, following the guidelines and objectives of the National Curriculum. This Summer Term will be packed full of exciting learning and collaborative opportunities, all linked to our brand-new project on Africa. This will include a Superb Starter, a Mix It Up Middle, and a fantastic art-themed end-of-term project, as well as our magical leavers’ showcase.
In English, we will continue to use a range of engaging texts to inspire writing. These will include Journey to Jo’burg, The Fastest Boy in the World, A Long Walk to Water, as well as African fables and short stories. The children will produce a range of fiction and non-fiction writing, including letters, diary entries, non-chronological reports, and stories.
In Maths, we will continue to revise previously taught areas of the curriculum in preparation for SATs in May. We will recap key areas such as arithmetic, measurement, shape and geometry, graphs, data, and ratio, applying this knowledge to problem-solving tasks. Once SATs are complete, our main aim will be to prepare the children for their transition to secondary school by deepening and extending their mathematical understanding through investigations and problem-solving.
We will also cover many areas of the wider curriculum, inspired by our project. History lessons will focus on Ancient Benin and the transatlantic slave trade (Maafa). The children will develop an in-depth understanding of the challenges faced by people of African heritage throughout history, building empathy and awareness.
In Art, we will explore the work of influential Black artists and African art. The children will analyse these works and create their own interpretations. In Music, we will learn about African music and rhythms.
It is important that all members of Anning Class have a fantastic learning experience, especially in their final term at John Hellins. We aim to create wonderful memories so that the children can look back fondly on their time at the school in years to come.
