Edison Class
In Edison class, we follow the National Curriculum for maths and English. Our curriculum allows us to link, through projects, with all the other curriculum areas of science, history, geography, DT, art, music, cooking & nutrition and computing.
Our spring term project is called ‘Castles and Monarchs’. We will be looking at how castles have changed over time. We will investigate castle life and why castles were built beside streams, rivers or the sea. We will also look into some of Britain’s most famous monarchs, both past and present.
During English, we will be reading and writing both fiction and non-fiction texts that feature dragons and castles. We will also be writing fact files about castles and looking at a range of poems. Our book of poetry is called ‘Dragon with the Big Nose’.
In geography lessons, we will look at maps, use geographical language and compare the village of Potterspury to another village outside of Europe.
In history, we will look at the monarchs of the past and compare significant events. We will also look at how the construction of castles has changed over time.
In music, we will be looking at stringed instruments, appreciating and comparing the sounds they make, in comparison to other instruments. We will also listen to music from the Middle-Ages and compare this to more modern music.
During our art lessons, we will be working on our sketching skills, focussing on shading, patterns and lines. We will look at primary colours and colour mixing. We will be looking at applique artwork and investigate where it originates from. We will then look at how malleable surfaces allow an object to put an impression in it.
RE – Sikhism – we will understand how the Khalsa influences the lives of a Sikh.
Judaism – we will look at the Jewish festival, the meaning and significance in the Jewish faith.
Our computing lessons will focus on debugging, using technology safely and the internet. We will also explore the uses of technology in the wider world and how it is useful in everyday life.
In DT, we will use different mechanisms to make a product.
Cooking will lead us to investigate where food comes from, as well as looking at how to use cooking tools and equipment properly and safely. We will celebrate our topic with a medieval banquet.
In our science lessons, we will be looking at animals, their habitats and food chains. We will explore the school grounds to search and describe micro-habitats.
Our superb starter – Mr Knighton will dress up as a knight. The knight will facilitate a question-and-answer session.
Our mix it up middle will be our visit to Kenilworth Castle.
Our enthralling ending will be a medieval banquet.
