Einstein Class

In Einstein Class, we follow the National Curriculum for numeracy and English. Our creative curriculum is based on projects which we link to all areas of the National Curriculum. These areas are: science, geography, history, design and technology, art, music, cooking and nutrition and computing.

During our project, we aim to have opportunities for children to enhance their English skills - writing at length as well as focusing specifically on grammar, punctuation and spelling objectives.

Mathematics is also included, where possible, in our project and covers the objectives in the Year 3 curriculum. We teach maths in practical and exciting ways, ensuring we deepen the understanding that children have of the three key areas: problem solving, reasoning, and fluency.

Our projects run for a term and they involve exciting days for the children including trips, visitors, child led ‘Google’ days and WOW days.

Our spring project in Einstein Class is Rainforests.

We are really looking forward to this topic and all of the colourful, exciting and adventurous learning it will involve. The environment will include a waterfall reading area and lots of rainforest animals such as, monkeys and parrots along with lots of fascinating reading material to engage all types of readers.

We will start off with our superb starter, orienteering and mapping day, looking at the compass points and introducing ourselves to the rainforests. Our ‘mix it up middle’ is a trip to the Living Rainforest in Newbury, and our ‘enthralling ending’ will be a product design day where the children will design and, in true Dragons’ Den style, present their work to an audience.

In maths, we will be looking at money, length and perimeter and fractions, while also consolidating our knowledge of number and place value from autumn term.

In English, we have a wealth of quality texts to inspire us in our reading and writing, including the Kapok Tree and The Explorer by Katherine Rundell.

In art, we will take inspiration from the post-impressionism movement and complete an artist study on Henri Rousseau.

In geography, we will be completing lots of atlas work and gaining a greater depth of knowledge of the world around us, including the bio-geographical features of Brazil and the rainforests. This links well to the music objectives, which are to understand the music and musicians of Brazil and replicate the sounds of the rainforest using instruments; we may even make our own instruments for the children to bring home - if you are lucky!

In PE, we will spend time learning team games such as handball and basketball. We will also be completing a disability friendly unit of work, improving our skills in archery, boccia, curling and goalball.

Our RE curriculum days will cover Sikhism and Buddhism and we have visitors coming in to school representing both of these faiths.

In science, we will look at light and shadow (linking it to the environment found in the rainforest), the life cycle of plants and how they reproduce.

This is a fantastic topic and we are very excited to be teaching it.
