History

At John Hellins we teach our history curriculum throughout the year, where possible linking it to our classroom theme/topic.

The history curriculum has been designed so that the children’s knowledge and skills progress as they move through the school, building on their prior learning and therefore extending their knowledge and ability to place different eras in chronological order.  By teaching in this manner, the children are able to draw on schemata in their long-term memory to better understand and place new information, dates and events in the correct time period.  The curriculum is designed to have numerous opportunities for cross-curricular work.  There are also numerous reoccurring themes, concepts and vocabulary which are revisited as the children progress through the school, reinforcing the spiral curriculum.

The teaching of History has so many opportunities for the ‘Wow’ factor and this may come through drama lessons, outdoor learning, visitors or education visits to museums etc.
