Being the best we can be

Learning

Class 1

In Class One, we are focused on ensuring there is a smooth transition between the EYFS curriculum and the National Curriculum. The classroom environment is organised to encourage focused, independent learning whilst also captivating the children's imaginations.

This term our topic is called ‘Oh the Places You’ll Go’. There will be plenty of opportunities for outdoor learning, particularly in the forest schools area and it will focus on travel, transport, plants, animals and minibeasts. Our classroom is set up linked to camping and there will be lots of links to camping and survival skills across the topic. Before Easter, many of us started an interest in birds and bird watching, so some of our learning will extend our interest in birds, particularly our Icarus Falconry Experience at Holdenby House.

In Mathematics, we will recap our knowledge and understanding of number, place value and the four calculations. We will also begin learning to tell the time and build on our understanding of months, weeks, days, hours and minutes. This term, we will also be learning about the value of money.

Every week, we have a guided reading session and encourage the children to read as much as possible at home. In addition to this a weekly spelling pattern will be given out. The children are encourage to practise the pattern within school and at home. We have daily phonics sessions in Class 1 and phonics is embedded into the environment. Our writing skills are developed through units linked to our main topic.
